June 27 (Reuters) - Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA.O) on Tuesday warned that lower spending by inflation-spooked consumers and a hit from a larger-than-expected drop in COVID product sales would likely persist into next year, sending its shares plunging nearly 9%. Walgreens' shares were at $28.87 in early trading, hitting an over 11-year low after the company slashed its profit forecast for the year. The pharmacy chain also said its newly launched healthcare business, through which it operates doctors' offices, missed Walgreens' target for sales growth. "There are some factors impacting us today that are likely to extend into next year, namely the macroeconomic-driven consumer pressure and COVID headwinds." June 27 (Reuters) - Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA.O) slashed its profit forecast for the year as persistently high inflation hits sales of consumer healthcare goods and demand for COVID shots and tests wanes, sending its shares plunging 8% on Tuesday. "Our revised guidance takes an appropriately cautious forward view in light of consumer spending uncertainty," CEO Rosalind Brewer said in a statement. Walgreens' shares were trading at $29.21, on track to open at their lowest levels since 2012, if losses held. In the third quarter of the fiscal year, Walgreens reported a 0.2% fall in same-store sales at its retail division, compared with estimates of a 2.1% rise, according to brokerage TD Cowen. Walgreens said its forecast cut reflected "challenging consumer and macroeconomic conditions, and lower COVID-19 vaccine and testing volumes".

Its pharmacy sales increased 6.3% in the period versus a year ago, while comparable pharmacy sales increased 9.8%, boosted by higher prices of branded medication. But the volume of Covid vaccines administered in the quarter plummeted to 0.8 million, compared to 4.7 million a year ago. Outside of pharmacy products, Walgreens reported retail sales fell 1% and comparable sales decreased 0.2% in the quarter. Excluding tobacco, comparable retail sales increased 0.2%, led by purchases of grocery, household and beauty items.

During the summer of 2020, the composer and lyricist Madeline Myers spent hours at the piano in her Manhattan apartment as she struggled to write three songs for her new musical, “Double Helix,” about the British chemist Rosalind Franklin. The challenge wasn’t strictly about marrying words to a score, but conveying the science of a crucial moment in the discovery of DNA’s structure — and making the songs entertaining. Franklin’s experiments, in which she successfully used X-ray crystallography to create images of DNA, became the basis for James Watson and Francis Crick’s groundbreaking 1953 discovery of the double helix structure. The breakthrough underpins our modern understanding of genetics and biology, but for years Franklin received none of the credit. (She died of cancer in 1958 at the age of 37; her male colleagues were later awarded the Nobel Prize.)

To the Editor:Re “Essay Extends Debate Over DNA Discovery” (Science Times, May 2):Determining the role that Rosalind Franklin played in the discovery of the structure of DNA remains a contentious issue. Lamentably, Dr. Franklin is often one of the few female scientists people can name as one who deserved more credit than she received during her lifetime. There are hundreds — if not thousands — of such unsung women throughout history. This has become increasingly evident to us as we work our way through our ever-increasing database of 250 deceased women of science. It might be true that today’s women are less likely to be shortchanged when it comes to receiving credit — and for that we are grateful.
